Coates Community Arts is an independent community art space in the CBD. We are in the Coates Building at 20 Collins Street, Melbourne. You can find us in Suite 6 on the fourth floor, in the former offices of the Federation of Chinese Associations. Our venue is utilised for one-off and reoccurring events such as exhibitions, presentations, workshops, book launches, pop-up retail, dance and theatre. It is a clean commercial space with white walls, an original timber veneer wall, a retro counter and bench seat, and large industrial windows. Coates Community Arts has a storeroom and kitchenette. It is fitted with fluorescent and track lighting, ceiling fans, and an in-built sound system suitable for background music. We supply 45 stackable chairs, 4 trestle tables, and POS hardware for events free of charge. Glassware is available for hire. We're located in the city centre at the top end of Collins Street, directly opposite the Sofitel Hotel, and close to Parliament House. The Coates Building was built in the late 1950s and is a Post-War Modernist commercial building. Many of the current tenants are medical practitioners. We are the first and only arts space in the building.
